Caring for Your Gage Diamonds Fine Jewelry

Your beautiful Gage Diamonds jewelry deserves the best care. Properly caring for your piece will help to maintain its beauty for years to come.

WEAR AND TEAR

DO Limit exposure to everyday substances like hairspray, lotion, perfumes, cosmetics and household cleaners.

DON’T Expose to chemicals, extreme temperatures and air pollution. Doing so can damage or discolor precious metals and gemstones.

PRO TIP Protect your pieces from friction against hard surfaces. A simple bump on concrete can chip or even cause a diamond to fall out!

REMOVAL AND STORAGE

DO Store your pieces in a jewelry box with individual slots.

DO When traveling, use jewelry rolls or travel cases.

DON’T Wear when…. swimming in a chlorinated swimming pool, working out, playing contact sports and cleaning your home or garden.

PRO TIP Pearls and opals draw moisture from the surrounding air, so avoid storing them in a safety deposit box.

CLEANING

DO Have your fine jewelry professionally cleaned and checked every six months.

DO Inspect your pieces between check-ups and ask yourself…. Are any diamonds missing? Does the center stone feel secure or loose? Is the clasp secure? Does your ring need to be sized up or down? If the piece is white gold, is there noticeable discoloration?

DO Clean your jewelry at home with warm water, mild dish soap (not detergent) and a soft toothbrush. Wash and rinse in a bowl or glass of water.

DON’T Wash directly over the sink.

DON’T Use ultrasonic cleaners on emeralds, organic gems, treated stones or other stones that are sensitive to heat.

PRO TIP Use ultrasonic cleaners with caution, as they may loosen or chip the stones in your jewelry.

INSURANCE

DO Purchase jewelry insurance. It’s the most reliable way to protect against long-term damage or loss.

DO Look for insurance that covers theft, accidental loss and potential damage from daily wear and tear.

DO Invest in Gage Diamonds’ complimentary six-month After Care Program. After six months, we strongly suggest purchasing comprehensive insurance for all fine jewelry.

PRO TIP We recommend Jewelers Mutual for your insurance needs, but you can also add fine jewelry to many homeowners/renters’ policies.

BAND & STONE TIPS

WHITE GOLD

WARNING Daily wear and exposure to chemicals could cause the rhodium on your white gold jewelry to gradually wear away, exposing the natural, yellowish-white tone of the metal underneath. Products with black rhodium will also wear away over time.

PRO TIP White gold rings can be professionally re-plated to return them to their original luster. Regular refinishing is recommended for products with black rhodium.

PLATINUM

WARNING Platinum is more susceptible to small scratches than other metals and may start to lose its shiny appearance.

PRO TIP Platinum jewelry can be professionally repolished to restore its sheen.

SILVER

WARNING Sterling silver may tarnish or dull with exposure to humidity.

PRO TIP Keep your silver in an airtight container. To remove tarnish, gently rub your piece of jewelry with a polishing cloth, rinse it thoroughly in warm water and dry carefully. More extensive tarnish can be removed by a jeweler or with liquid silver cleaner.

BONUS TIP Avoid chlorine and bleach, as they accelerate the tarnishing process.

DIAMONDS, MOISSANITES AND OTHER GEMSTONES

WARNING Prongs may become loose when snagged or hit against a surface. This may result in a loose or missing stone.

PRO TIP Professional inspections are recommended immediately after your jewelry is damaged, hit or unusually scratched to ensure that the structure of the ring and all gemstones are intact.

BONUS TIP Sapphires, emeralds and amethysts are particularly heat sensitive. Avoid exposing these popular gemstones to extreme temperatures.
