What is a Dress Watch?

As the name suggests, a dress watch is basically a timepiece that can be worn with more formal attire. Think suits, jackets, etc. This type of watch boasts an elegant and minimal design, as it’s not meant to be the center of attention. So, you typically won’t find chronographs and other complex features on this piece. Some dress watches don’t even include a seconds hand.

Jewelry and watch manufacturer Cartier issued one of the first dress watches in 1917, which was defined by a trendy rectangular case. Now, plenty of other companies, such as Rolex and OMEGA, make their own dress watches.

Elements of a Dress Watch

●Narrow Look: These pieces typically have a narrower dial and strap, so they can easily slip under a shirt cuff or other type of sleeve.

●Smaller Case: A case refers to the outer piece that holds all watch parts in place, just like our bones and muscles are contained within our skin. When it comes to dress watches, most cases range between 34 and 40 millimeters, which is standard or slightly smaller than other case sizes.

●Round Shape: Similar to other watches, round dress watches are the standard option. But other shapes, such as rectangular pieces, are also acceptable.

●Precious Metals: You’ll likely find them crafted in yellow, white or rose gold or even platinum.

●Leather Strap: While some versions come with a metal bracelet, most dress watches are paired with a smooth or textured leather strap. Acceptable color choices include black, brown and navy.

●Date Window: If a dress watch incorporates additional features, you might see a seconds hand or date window. As you may have guessed, this small window displays the date, and it’s usually placed at 3 o’clock.

●Even though dress watches are typically associated with formal wear, you can also pair them with more casual outfits. Think of a nice shirt/polo and jeans! You can even experiment with fun colors.

●So, how much do these elegant pieces cost? You can likely find some for a few hundred dollars, but others will cost thousands of dollars. If you’re on a budget, keep in mind that simpler designs will be more affordable.

●Dress watches aren’t known to be water-resistant. Most are only considered “splash-resistant.” If you want your piece to last for years to come, store it in a safe place while you’re at the pool or beach.
