Natural Diamonds vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds: What’s the Difference?

Are you looking for the perfect engagement ring for that special someone in your life? Diamonds and gemstones come in many forms and too many options can be overwhelming. We’re here to help you understand the different types of diamonds out there so you and your partner can have a brilliant engagement!

Natural DiamondsNatural diamonds are precious and one-of-a-kind. That’s because they were formed billions of years ago between 90 and 120 miles below the Earth’s surface, according to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Due to a strictgrading system, only about 30% of diamonds mined across the world qualify to become gems.Natural diamonds are also extremely durable. They score a perfect 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale and can therefore be passed down for generations. You know the saying, “A diamond is forever!”

Lab-Grown Diamonds

Despite the name, these are real diamonds! They’re sustainably created in a laboratory and made of carbon, just like natural diamonds. According to GIA, these diamonds entered the jewelry market in large quantities within the past decade.

Lab-grown diamonds have the same look, durability and sparkle as natural diamonds. In fact, only trained gemologists and sophisticated equipment can tell the difference. But one big difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds is price. Lab-grown diamonds cost 30-40% less than natural diamonds. This could be a nice option if you’re on a tighter budget. Keep in mind, however, that lab-grown diamonds have a lower resale value than natural diamonds.

If you’re still unsure whether your ring of choice features a natural or lab-grown diamond, GIA recommends checking the diamond’s certification, which should be available through your chosen jewelry store.

Moissanites (Diamond Simulant)

Moissanites are also created in a laboratory and an alternative option to diamonds. They’re instead known as gemstones born from the stars! That’s because the rare mineral, silicon carbide, that makes up moissanites, was discovered more than 120 years ago in a meteorite crater.

Moissanites have been growing rapidly in popularity. They’re highly durable, brilliant and look similar to diamonds. They’re also the most economical choice, often costing 70% less than natural diamonds. It’s important to note, however, that moissanites don’t follow the same grading system as diamonds, and they don’t retain their value as well. But if you’re after a large center stone, a moissanite is a great option!
