How to Clean Your Engagement Ring

Properly caring for your engagement ring with regular cleanings will keep your ring in tip-top shape! While you should have your engagement ring professionally cleaned every six months, follow these at-home tips to ensure your ring maintains its sparkle!

When to Clean Your Ring

Our rings go everywhere and do everything with us, and with that comes all the dirt and debris we encounter on a daily basis. Everyday substances like hairspray, lotion, perfumes, cosmetics and household cleaners can work their way into the nooks and crannies of your ring causing a dull appearance. So how often should we be cleaning them? If you wear your ring daily, you should be cleaning your engagement ring every two weeks!

Where to Clean Your Ring

You can clean your engagement ring with just a few everyday items you likely already have laying around. Although a bathroom or kitchen is the understandable place you’d clean your ring, never clean or rinse directly over the sink – for obvious reasons!

How to Clean Your Ring

Although diamonds are known for their durability, cleaning incorrectly or with the wrong products can lead to damage of the metal and stones. Harsh chemicals like bleach, acetone and chlorine will do more harm than good. Our certified gemologist recommends cleaning with warm water and mild soap.

  1. Fill a bowl with warm water and a few drops of dish soap
  2. Let your ring soak in the dish for 10 – 15 minutes to loosen any dirt, debris or product buildup that may have settled
  3. Use a clean, soft bristle toothbrush to gently remove any remaining residue
  4. Rinse with clean water and pat dry with a clean cloth
  5. Voila! Your ring will sparkle like the day you got it!

You can also purchase a cleanser specifically made for jewelry, or use an ultrasonic cleaner, but do so with caution. Ultrasonic cleaners work by sending vibrations through the cleaning solution to rapidly remove buildup, which can in turn loosen stones in your setting. They should never be used for rings with emeralds, organic gems, treated stones or other stones that are sensitive to heat, as they will likely damage the stone!

Take this opportunity to also inspect your ring. Is it missing any side stones? Does the center stone feel secure? Is there discoloration to the band? Is it too loose or too tight on your finger? Notify your jewelry immediately of any issues to ensure no further damage!
