Meet the Seasoned Pro: The Salt and Pepper Diamond

Those big and bright white diamonds can definitely take your breath away. But do they sometimes look too pristine? If you want to give the love of your life something that will truly stand out, consider a salt and pepper diamond engagement ring. Not sure what that is? We’re here to tell you about these special stones!

What are Salt and Pepper Diamonds?

Just like traditional white diamonds, salt and pepper versions are also real diamonds. They formed billions of years ago below the Earth’s surface and are made of carbon. But as the name suggests, these diamonds look like they have been sprinkled with salt and pepper! The gray speckles are caused by several inclusions (aka imperfections

inside of the diamond) that appear as black and white.

Even though salt and pepper diamonds have been around for centuries, they didn’t become a phenomenon until recently. In fact, some jewelry experts say they were often tossed aside during the diamond sorting process due to their flaws. Depending on the number of imperfections, these gems range in color, from dark to light gray, and pair well with different types of metal. Yellow or rose gold creates a nice, vintage look, while white gold or platinum brings out a sleeker, modern piece.

Salt and pepper stones might not be as rare as other types of diamonds, but they can still be hard to find. If you come across them, you’ll typically see fancy cuts – such as triangular, hexagonal and oval shapes – to highlight the inclusion patterns and color of these unique gems.

Pro Tip: Unlike other gemstones, there isn’t an ideal shade of salt and pepper diamonds. It’s really up to your personal taste!

Pros of Salt and Pepper Diamonds

  • Since salt and pepper diamonds are real diamonds, they’re equally durable! They score a 10 out of 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale – a scale that ranks the durability of diamonds, gemstones and other minerals.
  • These gems are fashionable and work well in many types of engagement ring settings. They also make great conversation starters!
  • You won’t be able to find two identical salt and pepper diamonds. Each stone has its own unique character.
  • Given their gray color and imperfections, salt and pepper diamonds can hide scratches better than white diamonds.
  • If you’re on a budget, salt and pepper diamonds could be a great option. They’re more affordable due to their less-than-perfect appearance. And the price-per-carat doesn’t skyrocket if you choose a larger stone.
  • Fewer resources are needed when mining salt and pepper diamonds, making them an eco-friendly gem!

Cons of Salt and Pepper Diamonds

  • Traditional diamonds are graded on four characteristics: cut, color, clarity and carat weight (aka the 4 C’s). But given the speckled look of salt and pepper diamonds, it’s difficult for trained gemologists to evaluate them. Therefore, these stones can’t be fully graded with this system. They’re instead judged on the unique look of each stone.
  • Although salt and pepper gems are extremely durable, they’re more likely to chip as a result of their internal imperfections.
  • Salt and pepper stones have less sparkle than traditional diamonds. While white diamonds are often cut to highlight their brilliance, salt and pepper gems are crafted differently to emphasize other qualities.
  • These unique stones can only be found at select jewelers, meaning you might have a harder time getting your stone inspected and repaired in the future.

How to Care for a Salt and Pepper Diamond

You might not notice when your salt and pepper diamond starts turning dull, but dust and other particles are still building up around it. Jewelry experts recommend cleaning your ring once a month and taking it off whenever you wash your hands. The constant exposure to soap and water could eventually cause the stone to lose its luster.
