What is an “Eye-Clean” Diamond?

Here’s a fun diamond fact that you might not know. Despite their seemingly perfect appearance, most diamonds have imperfections. But you’re likely not seeing them because engagement and wedding rings usually feature “eye-clean” diamonds. What does that mean? We’re glad you asked because we’re about to tell you more!

What is an “Eye-Clean” Diamond?

You may have already guessed it! An eye-clean diamond is a stone without visible imperfections. That doesn’t mean, however, that the gem is flawless. It’s actually rare to locate a “perfect” diamond. Eye-clean simply means that you can’t see these defects with the naked eye. They’re either well hidden by the ring setting or require special equipment to be spotted.

What Diamond Clarity Grade is Ideal for Eye-Clean Diamonds?

Diamond clarity refers to the purity of the stone, so diamonds with fewer imperfections will have better clarity. It’s also worth noting that imperfections are technically referred to as “blemishes” and “inclusions.” Blemishes are imperfections on the outside of the diamond, such as abrasions, scratches, polish lines and burn marks. Inclusions, on the other hand, developed when the diamond first formed and can be found inside of the stone.

Since many blemishes and inclusions aren’t visible to the naked eye, trained diamond graders follow the Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA) Diamond Clarity Scale to give stones the following ratings:

● Flawless (FL)- No inclusions or blemishes can be seen under 10x magnification.

● Internally Flawless (IF)- No inclusions can be seen under 10x magnification.

● Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2)- Inclusions are so minor that they’re difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification.

● Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2)- With effort, inclusions can be seen under 10x magnification, but they’re typically characterized as minor.

● Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2)- Inclusions are visible under 10x magnification.

● Included (I1, I2, and I3)- Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification and can affect the diamond’s transparency and brilliance.

So, which ranking should you consider when shopping for an eye-clean diamond? Unfortunately, there isn’t a standard answer. It depends on the diamond and your perspective! Some jewelry experts say you can find eye-clean diamonds with SI1 or SI2 gradings, but that’s not always the case. Other experts think you should be looking somewhere in the VS1 and VS2 range.

But most industry professionals agree that you shouldn’t overpay for an eye-clean diamond. Therefore, you don’t need to aim for FL or IF gems. As long as your stone looks good to the eye, you can pass it off as an even higher-quality diamond.

*Pro Tip: Certain diamond shapes, such as cushion, oval and pear cuts, can disguise imperfections better than others. Keep that in mind when searching!

Tips for Choosing an Eye-Clean Diamond

● Inspect from a distance: Some experts recommend examining your stone from 6-12 inches away, as imperfections might not appear when viewing up close.

● Trust your eyes over reports: While it’s good to review diamond grading reports to know where each imperfection is located, they don’t always match what you’re seeing with your eyes.

● Check your diamond in various types of light: Every gem will likely look good under the bright fluorescent lighting in your local jewelry store. But diamonds sparkle differently in natural daylight, and you therefore might catch more imperfections.

● Avoid diamonds with blemishes/inclusions in the center of the stone: You wouldn’t want a gem with noticeable dark spots, as these will certainly affect the way your diamond shimmers. Instead, look for diamonds with imperfections near the stones’ edges. Prongs and other design elements in your ring can probably mask them.

● Ask for a second opinion: If you’re unsure about anything you’re seeing, don’t hesitate to check with a trusted jeweler. And ask to see close-up photos of the gem to make sure you’re not missing something!
