Celebrate Your Outstanding Love with These Non-Traditional Engagement Ring Settings

When you’re with your significant other, the world seems a little brighter. And time seems to stop just for the two of you. So, why would you propose with a standard engagement ring that millions of others buy? You need a ring that’s as extraordinary as the love you share. Not sure where to start? We’re here to help! Check out these non-traditional engagement ring settings.

What is an Engagement Ring Setting?

Before we jump in, let’s define an important term. An engagement ring setting refers to the way that diamonds or gemstones of your choice are positioned in a ring band. Basically, it’s everything except the center stone.

While it’s important to consider your partner’s preferences when choosing a ring, you should also consider their lifestyle. You wouldn’t want your gem to chip shortly after proposing! Plenty of design options are available, so get ready to learn more.

Non-Traditional Engagement Ring Settings

Toi et Moi

If you want an extra romantic touch, why not pop the question with a ring that literally means “you and me?” This setting incorporates two center stones and has become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly among celebrities. The gems are typically similar in size but sometimes offer different colors, shapes and cuts. For example, you’ll find some toi et moi rings featuring one round brilliant cut diamond and an emerald cut diamond. The concept of pairing different gems is said to represent two personalities coming together.

East-West

To put it simply, east-west settings feature center stones that are turned horizontally vs. vertically. Think of a pear-shaped diamond. In an east-west setting, the teardrop shape would appear sideways instead of upright. This design creates an eye-catching look for longer-shaped gems, as it helps the stone appear larger

Bezel

Unlike most rings that use prongs to hold diamonds/gemstones in place, a bezel setting uses metal to completely enclose the diamonds/gemstones. Only the upper portion of the diamond is visible. This type of setting is a stronger and more protective option. Therefore, it’s a great choice for healthcare workers and others who often work with their hands.

Colored Diamond/Gemstone

If you hear the term “fancy color diamond,” that’s simply a diamond that displays a color outside of the Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA) color scale, which has become the industry standard for grading diamonds. Fancy color diamonds, however, can be found in a variety of shades — from pink, yellow, red and purple to orange, green, blue and black.

When it comes to choosing such a diamond, color is the most important characteristic. In fact, these stones follow their own GIA color scale, and they’re graded based on how dark/light the gems might be and the intensity of their color. Want to know where your diamond ranks? Take a peek at the categories.

*Pro Tip: If you don’t want to splurge on a diamond, substitute with a gemstone that displays the color you’re seeking. For inspiration, rubies, sapphires and emeralds are beautiful, durable alternatives.

Compass Prong

After looking at enough engagement rings, particularly those with round and square-shaped gems, you might notice a common design pattern. If you drew an imaginary line to connect each prong securing the center stone, you’d form a box. But in compass prong settings, the prongs are positioned differently. They instead resemble points on a compass (north, south, east and west), hence the name! For a princess cut diand, that means the stone is turned as well. So, the gem’s pointed edges also face north, south, east and west when you look at it.

Split Shank

The band on a split shank ring separates into two pieces to perfectly hug the center stone — creating symmetry, character and sophistication. With this secure construction, split shanks can hold just about any diamond shape and be designed with various elements. For example, some split shank settings incorporate a “halo” (circle of smaller diamonds around the center stone), and the ring’s increased surface area is enticing for side stones and extra sparkle.

*Pro Tip: Due to their sophisticated design, split shank rings should be cleaned more often than simpler engagement ring settings.

Bubble

When you wear a bubble ring, it will literally look like a string of bubbles wrapped around your finger! Th “bubbles” are typically diamonds in bezel settings with a single, rounded prong separating each one. In some designs, bubbles decorate the entire band while others only feature them on the top half of the ring. You might even be able to customize your ring with colored gemstones.
